To think quick, and strike hard, to speak rarely, but when I did, to always be heard. Sit up straight, cross my ankles, let men protect me. QUOTES – “Papi was … a king who built an empire so I’d have a thrown to inherit.” So when I was bored the story took forever, and when I wanted more, it was a race to the end. I became slightly more invested toward the end and the relationship between the sisters, but when we finally got there, it felt rushed. Yahaira lives in New York, and Camino in the Dominican Republicand neither know the other exists. The lives of two sisters are shattered when their father is killed in a plane crash. However, the exploration of these was redundant and caused the first the first part of the book to move too slowly. Elizabeth Acevedo’s latest novel, Clap When You Land, takes it to another level. Second, it does deal with deep themes like grief and imperfect parents. I can appreciate the writing yet not really connect with the story. However, I don’t think novels in verse resonate with me when it comes to storytelling. I heard so many great reviews that I am mad at myself for not liking it more.įirst, it is beautifully written! I have not read anything in verse before and it descriptive and beautiful. Unpopular opinion here, I really did not love this one. ![]()
